Postpartum Hair Loss: What Every New Mom Should Know

If you’re finding clumps of hair in your shower drain or noticing your once-thick locks looking thinner than usual, you’re not alone. Postpartum hair loss is one of those pregnancy surprises that catches many new moms off guard, but it’s completely normal and temporary.

When Does postpartum hair loss Happen?

Most women experience postpartum hair loss between 3 to 6 months after delivery. During pregnancy, elevated estrogen levels keep your hair in its growth phase longer, which is why many women enjoy thick, lustrous hair during those nine months. Once hormone levels drop after birth, all that extra hair enters the shedding phase at once, creating what feels like dramatic hair loss.

Who’s Affected?

Nearly 90% of new mothers experience some degree of postpartum hair shedding. Whether you’re breastfeeding or bottle-feeding, had a vaginal delivery or C-section, this hormonal shift affects almost everyone. The good news? Your hair will return to its pre-pregnancy state, typically within 6 to 12 months.

Taming Those Pesky Flyaways

As new hair begins to grow back, you’ll likely notice short, stubborn flyway’s sticking up around your hairline and crown. Here are some tried-and-true solutions:

Clear mascara is your secret weapon. Use a clean mascara wand with clear mascara gel to gently brush down flyaways. The gel provides just enough hold without looking obvious or feeling crunchy.

Train your hair with headbands. My hairdresser suggested this one! Wearing soft headbands regularly can help train new growth to lay flat against your head as it grows out.

Try a lightweight hair oil or serum. A tiny amount of argan oil or anti-frizz serum smoothed over damp hair can weigh down flyaways without making your hair look greasy.

Consider a silk or satin pillowcase. These smooth fabrics create less friction while you sleep, reducing morning bedhead and flyaways.

Use a boar bristle brush. These brushes help distribute your scalp’s natural oils down the hair shaft, providing natural smoothing power.

Remember, patience is key. Your hair is going through a major transition, and with a little TLC, you’ll be back to having manageable, healthy hair before you know it. Trust me! As a twin mom with low iron, my hair went from falling out in handfuls to growing back all at once.
