Great Secondhand baby items to buy
I feel there is a stigma attached to secondhand baby items. Not everyone considers purchasing used for their baby. I am here to say it is worth it! For example car seats, they can expire or have been in an accident, which makes them unsafe. Or a stroller that a mama wants to be new but looks slightly beat up. When we found out we were having twins, I knew we had to purchase some items secondhand. It made sense financially and because we needed two of EVERYTHING!
I get it, we want the shiny new items, but let me tell you baby’s beat up everything quickly. It won’t look new for long. Secondhand baby items were going to be a lifesaver for us. One tip, if you use Facebook Marketplace find another person who has a baby slightly older than yours and follow them. You will get an update when they have items for sale. I did this with a few twin mamas and it was great!
I want to share the list of secondhand baby items we purchased and why buying used was a great option.
Secondhand Baby Items
- Clothing: Babies grow quickly when they’re a newborn. A lot of the clothes I found were either new or barely used. It’s a great way to find higher end clothing for less. Plus they hold their value and you will be able to resell them when you’re baby outgrows them.
- Books: Lots of babies outgrow books. I found a lot online and in the little libraries around our neighborhood. When we were finished with them I was able to pass the onto other families.
- Crib and Mattress: I fell in love with the Babyletto Hudson 3 in 1 crib. It was nice it could convert to a toddler bed and the mattress could move all the way up or down. I figured we could find it secondhand and we did! I bought two cribs with organic waterproof mattresses for $200.
- Baby Carrier: I found both a soft wrap and carrier secondhand. The Ergo Carrier was $150 brand new and I was able to buy it for $40 and then sold it for the same amount! The soft carrier I used was the Boba Wrap, the girls loved this when they were little.
- Toys: There were some toys, like Lovevery that are pricey as part of the subscription but when kids outgrow those toys, parents sell them. Finding quality toys secondhand was great.
- Changing Table: We ended up finding a cute antique dresser we used as a changing table. It was a budget find at $60 and then I splurged on the Moses Basket.
- Baby Car Seats: I found a twin mama who was selling a few items so bought the baby car seats from her. They were in great condition and to start this was the perfect option.
What we bought new
- High Chair: I did try to find the Stokke Tripp Trapp High Chair secondhand but it was impossible! They are very popular. This was a good investment. We have used it from when they were a baby and now 4 years later. Plus they hold their value as a secondhand baby item.
- Stroller: This was a hard one to find secondhand as we needed a double stroller and I wanted a side by side one. I loved the Valco Baby Stroller. It was lightweight, fit through doorways and went from newborn to toddler. Their strollers lay all the way back so you don’t need a basinet.
- Baby Monitor: This was something I simply wanted to buy new. I liked the Vtech Baby Monitor as I didn’t want an app on my phone.
- Breast Pump: Did you know you can rent breast pumps? With twins we wanted a hospital grade breast pump and it made more sense to rent it for a short time.
- Convertible Car Seat: We bought one similar to this, as it will convert as they grow! I think these are hard to come by as secondhand baby items because kids use them for so long!
- Rocker: I LOVED these Maxi Cosi Rockers. Not only could I rock our twins in them but we ended up using them for bottle feeds. They have a little foot on them that will stop the rocking. Highly recommend these.
Always make sure to inspect any secondhand baby items for damage or safety issues. Research any recalls and dates for products that expire. As a first time mama, buying secondhand was the right choice! It save us money and we were able to sell most items for what we bought them for originally.
